Red and White Stripe Methodology

    • Red Stripes, Creative Expression
the thunder of the drums, power of unified voices, strength of aligned movement through dance.
    • White Stripes, Facilitated Dialogue:
silence, introspection, active listening and purposeful dialogue.
    • Safe environment:
young people develop trust and open up to each other. This encourages young people to make personal, emotional connection with the issue discussed, which is essential to facilitate sustainable behavior change.

History

sketch5The RedZebra Foundation in South Africa was established in 2011 by Mark Dodsworth and Peter Schaupp as a Non-profit Organization (NPO) from the community outreach initiatives of the RedZebra Global’s South Africa office. Leveraging off of the legacy of almost twenty years of bringing percussion, music, song and the performing arts to people all over South Africa and the world, the Foundation seeks to creatively contribute to communities whereby young people are empowered through the arts to create positive social change and safer, healthier and equitable communities.

RedZebra Foundation understands the key to successfully empowering young people is through total engagement .Using the power of the performing arts each individual becomes involved in his own creative journey. As an individual becomes involved in his/her own creative journey, he/she inevitably experiences inspiration and growth. RedZebra Foundation is also registered as NPO with Department of Social Development and as Public Beneficiary Organisations with the Receiver of Revenue of South Africa.

2015: We Can Beat It!

The “We can Beat It!” Project is an innovative life skills programme, using the creative arts and facilitated dialogue. It addresses youth between the ages of 12 to 30 (or organisations that work with youth) both in and out of school. Focus points are Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and Gender Equality. The project consists of three phases, involving teachers, peer educators and learners in underprivileged areas. It employs and develops peer educators to become confident positive role models with the ongoing support and coaching from RedZebra Foundation.

In 2015 we will be rolling out the programme in 6 schools in Nyanga, Hanover Park, Crossroads and Masiphumelele.

Project Goal

Young people in South Africa face a variety of challenges, including lack of positive role-models, teenage pregnancy, unemployment, drug abuse, gangsterism, HIV and AIDS as well as gender-based violence. Majority of youth growing up in underprivileged communities have limited or no access, to services that provide a safe space for them to explore themselves and think deeper regarding their future plans.

The overall goal of “We can Beat it!” project is to empower young people with the tools and knowledge, to make positive, constructive choices for their lives and become drivers of change in their schools and communities.

Past: dance4life

dance4life works with young people towards a world without AIDS. Through sex education in schools, using music and dance to involve and inspire young people. Furthermore, dance4life motivates young people to take action to stop the worldwide spread of HIV and AIDS. Half of the 6.300 people infected with HIV every day are under 25 years old. The initiative is active in over 20 countries, spread over 5 continents.

The “inspire” workshops of the dance4life programme and the corresponding training of peer educators were designed by RedZebra Global using the RedZebra methodology of red and white stripes as well as creating safe spaces for young people to open up and engage.
